The Support Labs team manages MAX IV’s user support laboratories, including the Biology Lab, Chemical Labs, Sample Environment Labs, Detector Support Lab, and specialized workshops. These facilities provide visiting scientists and staff with access to specialized equipment and expert assistance for sample preparation, characterization, and sample handling. These labs are accessible to individuals actively performing experiments at MAX IV and are intended to support a wide range of preparatory and technical tasks. Available to those actively conducting experiments at MAX IV, the labs are designed to support a broad spectrum of preparatory and technical tasks.
For a complete overview of available tools and guidelines for use, please consult with the respective lab coordinators.

The Bio & Chem labs at MAX IV are the central laboratory facility for the support of synchrotron experiments that are carried out at various beamlines and also for in-house research. The labs complement the various beamline-attached sample preparation facilities as well as the sample environment lab and are being developed to offer extended instrumentation access and support. The labs are available for the users with function of both basic operation such as fume hoods, pipettes, balances, hot plates, ultrasonic baths, ovens, cold storage (4°C, -20°C, -80°C, -152°C), chemical cabinets, supply of deionised and ultra pure water, waste disposal facilities, and more advanced instrumentation available upon booking.
In addition, the instruments listed below are accessible in the biological lab without the need for prior reservation (link to user manuals):
Cryo-EM @ Lund University includes a dedicated sample preparation laboratory, located within the Hard X-ray Chemical Lab, equipped with a Thermo Fisher Vitrobot Mark IV for preparing cryo grids. Samples can be prescreened using negative stain, and cryo grids can be imaged on our Glacios 2 cryo-TEM equipped with a Falcon 4i direct electron detector. The facility provides fee-based services to academic and external users.
The Sample Preparation lab is intended for preparation of samples and holders used in beamline experiments.
The beamline workshop is intended for quick mechanical tasks at any time of day. Among other tools, the workshop is equipped with a drilling machine and a bench sander which are available for booking.
The Rapid Prototyping Lab have a pool of rapid prototyping equipment available to the MAX IV community. There are several 3D printers, a benchtop Laser Cutter and a 4-axis CNC milling machine, with different technologies and materials. Together they allow the rapid prototyping and test from an enormous variety of materials. Simple plastic parts to 100% ceramic or conductive, carbon fibre reinforced materials, among others
The Sample Environment Lab is maintaining a stock of material and equipment relevant for experiments at beamlines, such as plastic and metallic foils, wires, glass capillaries, furnaces, circulation coolers, detectors, and electronics.
Site acceptance testing (SAT) for performance verification of new x-ray detectors, management of radioisotope source for in-beamline testing, workbench areas for interface and data streaming development efforts, and training
MAX IV houses a small optics metrology facility with three specialised instruments that can measure the real, 3D surface of an x-ray optic. The slope, radius, micro-roughness and surface structures can be found with a combination of white light interferometry, Fizeau interferometry and Atomic Force Microscopy. The use of the instruments is not limited to x-ray optics; experiment samples, machined parts and much more have also been characterised.
Lab support is available during office hours on weekdays from 8:00 to 17:00. Training requests and assistance with equipment use are available during office hours. Self-use outside of office hours is permitted but requires prior training. For more details, please refer to the guidelines specific to each piece of equipment.
